Building on the academic synergies across eight countries of Southeast Europe as affirmed at the 2024 Rectors’ Forum of Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans, we are excited to announce the Call for Fellowship Applications at the Regional Network of Centers for Advanced Studies in Southeast Europe (RECAS).

About the Fellowship Program

This Regional Fellowship offers researchers the chance to conduct their projects at various prestigious universities across Southeast Europe, fostering academic collaboration and expanding the network of engaged scholars. Fellows can spend up to four weeks conducting research at host institutions such as the Universities of Rijeka, Belgrade, and co-hosts including Prishtina, Skopje, Sarajevo, Tirana, Podgorica, or Ljubljana.

During the fellowship, participants will connect with local academic communities, gather data, or gain experience in specialized research methods. The fellowship also encourages interdisciplinary and cross-border research, equipping fellows to address critical information gaps and create innovative solutions for regional challenges.

2025 Fellowship Theme: Change in the Balkans – Strategic Interventions for Democratic Europe
The fellowship focuses on fostering change within the Balkans through strategic actions that promote democratic resilience and social innovation. This theme will explore pressing issues such as economic, digital, and green changes, addressing the region’s demographic challenges, migration patterns, and the role of grassroots movements in strengthening democracy.

The key thematic areas include:

  • Economic Change: Addressing the region's unsustainable pension systems, business succession gaps, and the role of circular migration.
  • Digital Change: Overcoming the challenges of limited digital infrastructure and cybersecurity issues while leveraging the region’s growing IT sector.
  • Green Change: Promoting sustainable development by addressing the Balkans' reliance on outdated energy infrastructure and advocating for a just green transition.

The fellowship is open to early-career researchers (Ph.D. candidates or those who completed a Ph.D. within the last five years). Researchers from the fields of humanities, social sciences, and arts are particularly encouraged to apply. Fluency in English is required as it is the working language of the fellowship.
