The Faculty of Philology

The Faculty of Philology offers nine bachelor study programs as listed below:

  • Albanian Language – BA, 240 ECTS

The Albanian Language Department offers studies on the Albanian language, the standard Albanian variety and other dialect varieties. Studying in the Department of Albanian Language is very important, because students will have the opportunity to expand and deepen their knowledge in theoretical linguistics, grammatical and phonetic system of Albanian, its structure, both synchronously and even on the diachronic plane. Students are also introduced to the concepts and principles of the fields of applied linguistics, which, on the one hand, enable students to conduct independent linguistic scientific research, while, on the other hand, also help them in their skills as teachers. So, they train them in teaching the Albanian language, either as a first language or as a second language. Consequently, the students of the Department of Albanian Language, after completing their studies, orient themselves to teaching in educational institutions in the country, but also in the field of editing and proofreading in the media and publishing houses in the country. The Department of Albanian Language has cooperation agreements with various universities in the world, especially with the centers of Albanology. Thanks to this cooperation, many students of the Department have managed, through various programs, such as ERASMUS + and Meëlana Exchange Program, to spend several semesters in different universities, such as: in Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, etc.The program aims at preparing professionals qualified for a range of activities related to the language use skills (Albanian), spelling, grammar rules and construction of larger linguistic units. The program is based on two main criteria: the economic (labor market) and cultural criteria (illumination). The first criterion is linked to the employment opportunities in administrative and cultural spheres (text editors), in education (teachers), as translators and journalists, whereas the second criterion is linked to study work (scientific researchers). The students of this program are prepared for a range of activities related to Albanian language, linguistics and Albanology in general. The student preparation is twofold: development of skills related to practical knowledge of Albanian language and teaching Albanian language as well as mastering of scientific methods and life-long learning skills.

  • German Language and Literature

BA program in German Language and Literature has been compiled as a basic qualification in German language and literature, complemented with courses which enable qualifications in the methodology and didactics of German as a foreign language, since a considerable number of graduates of this Department work in education institutions (public and private universities, public and private schools, the Goethe Institute, foreign language schools). Elective courses allow for the expansion and deepening of knowledge in specific fields, depending on the interests. The program provides on an equal footing the acquisition of theoretical and practical competences that enable flexible engagement in the labor market, as well as further study.

The core of the BA program of "German Language and Literature" comprises of linguistics (language structure), literature, history of literature, history of culture and civilization, history of language, concepts and methods of linguistics and literature research, translation, theory and practice of text, language practice (practical German course), methodology-didactics of teaching German as a foreign language.

Objectives of the program are as follows:

  • To enable students to further develop their language and communication skills;
  • To enable students to gain a clear picture of basic theories of linguistics and literature;
  • To enable them to use linguistic concepts in practice in the light of learned theory;
  • To familiarize them with very important primary and secondary sources of literature; including books, scientific journals, digital resources, and other digital media;
  • To familiarize students with current and contemporary methodological approaches to linguistics and enable them to apply them independently;
  • To enable students to critically analyze the resources used during their studies;
  • To enable students to further their knowledge of the structure and functioning of the German language in order to reflect on the structure and use of the language;
  • To enable them to deepen their language and communication skills in order to report verbally and in writing;
  • To enable students to stay for one semester at universities where German language is studied (through international cooperation).

  • Albanian Literature

The Program of Albanian Literature (BA) operates within the organizational structure of the Faculty of Philology of the University of tina "Hasan Prishtina". Therefore, this study program design is based on the guiding principles of this institution. The BA program of "Albanian Literature" is designed/ based on the needs of the labor market in Kosovo and offers several employment opportunities: as a teacher in the preuniversity cycle, employee in educational institutions or media (journalist, lecturer), translator, clerk in administration, etc. The Department of Albanian Literature, has designed this program conceived as a basic qualification in Albanian Literature, supplemented with courses that enable qualification in the field of methodology and didactics of Literature, The essence of the BA curriculum of consists of literary studies in its three basic components (Theory of Literature, History of Literature and Literary Criticism), as well as studies in related fields such as: World Literature, Comparative Literature, Civilization, Art History, Albanian Linguistics , Foreign languages ​​etc.

The key mission of this program is to provide basic studies of Albanian and world literature. Considering the need and requirements for teachers of Albanian Language and Literature in primary and secondary schools, this program is supplemented with courses that enable basic qualification in the field of methodology and didactics of literature.

This program focuses on preparing students to expand and deepen their theoretical and analytical knowledge and interpretive skills. The study program is prepared in full compliance with the mission principles of the institution. The BA Program "English Language and Literature" is conceived as a basic general qualification, complemented with courses that enable qualification in fields of linguistics, methodology and translation / interpreting of English as a foreign language and in the field of literary studies. Depending on students’ interest, elective courses enable the expansion and deepening of knowledge in specific areas. The program offers an equal level of theoretical and practical acquisition of competencies that enable flexible engagement in the labor market as well as chances for further studies.

The essence of the BA Curriculum consists of linguistics (language structure), literature, history of literature, history of culture and civilization, concepts and the research methods of linguistics and literature, translation, text theory and practice, language practice, and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language.

The Department of English Language and Literature, which operates within the Faculty of Philology, has designed this program conceived as a basic qualification in the field of linguistics, literature, methodology and translation / interpreting in English as a foreign language. Considering that a significant proportion of English Language and Literature graduates work in educational institutions (public and private universities, public and private schools and foreign languages schools), the program is complemented with courses that enable qualification in the aforementioned fields.

The mission of this program is to prepare English language teachers, translators, and linguists, focusing on different age groups, different sources and different language areas within English as a foreign language.   • Journalism

This study program is balanced between the theoretical and practical part of the work in the field of study. Students of this program during the educational process develop professional skills and their skills for theoretical knowledge and their application in the reality of our society.

The disciplines of this program of study create opportunities for students to form the knowledge and competencies necessary for the field of study, as well as for specific areas of this programming that are covered by the content of the subject. Some of the learning outcomes that this program aims for are:

  • Reporting and writing news stories, through subjects of Introduction to Journalism and
  • Reporting
  • Basic knowledge of Journalism Genres and Media Ethics
  • Knowledge of the History of Albanian and European Journalism
  • Learning key theories of media study
  • Knowledge and skills of Radio Journalism, Television Journalism and New Media and Portals.

Main objectives of this program are:

  • The journalism program is dedicated to educating and training journalists and professionals on the media market, which is still expanding and as such requires qualified journalists and media professionals.
  • Graduates will develop critical thinking, communication and team collaboration skills, as well as professional ethics in order to integrate themselves into the job market as easily as possible; they will also be prepared for a lifelong learning process.
  • Leadership, management, administration and staffing arrangements (see section 1 in this Introduction); This part should be drafted by the faculty
  • Its students, their socio-economic background and relevant contextual information about the area in which the program is offered.

All Kosovo high school graduates have the opportunity to enroll. In addition to the criteria of a formal nature (completion of high school in or out of the country or national final test, etc.), students must prove that they have basic knowledge of civic education and mother tongue. Therefore, the respective fields are subject to university entrance exams in the areas of: Albanian language and literature, civic education, and essay writing. This program offered by the Department of Journalism is the only one of the public universities in the country and therefore aims to have its students from all parts of Kosovo based on policies of the University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina” related to admission of students from abroad.

  • Teaching, learning and curriculum

Students are offered a study program that develops critical thinking, communication and team collaboration skills, and professional ethics in order to integrate them into the labour market as easily as possible, and to prepare them for lifelong learning. Teaching takes place in a modern way dominated by the individual work of students in researching and presentations of issues in the media sphere in Kosovo compared to the theories and best practices of this field of study. While preparing and observing, students get incentives for the job market in the Kosovo media and beyond; they also make critical judgments on media content and social media function by addressing media market problems in Kosovo both theoretically and empirically. The theoretical-based professional preparation they receive at this level of study can help the media market transition in Kosovo.

  • French Language and Literature – BA, 240 ECTS

The study program of French Language and Literature at the Ba level is conceived as a general basic qualification, supplemented by courses that enable the qualification in the field of methodology and didactics of the French language as a foreign language. All subjects enable the expansion and deepening of knowledge in certain areas, depending on the interests. The core of the BA curriculum consists of linguistics (linguistic structure and its use), literature, concepts and methods of linguistic and literary research, text theory and practice, translation, language practice, methodology-didactics of teaching French as a foreign language. The mission of this program is in full harmony with that of the University of Prishtina. Relevant documents on which the program is based are in line with the National Qualifications Framework, according to which this study program belongs to its level 7 which includes the preparation of students for such study levels and is also in line with the Erasmus Course Area.

The purpose of this 4-year program is for students to have a basic knowledge of French literature and its periodization, the structure of the French language, translation and interpretation at beginner levels and basic knowledge of the application of French teaching methods as a foreign language. for the planning of the teaching process, for the use of different didactic tools.

  • Orientalistics – Bachelor of Orientalistics, 240 ECTS

The BA program Orientalistics is designed based on the knowledge and the study of Oriental heritage in the region, as well as current interactions of the community with the world of Orient. Thus, this program is perceived as a basic general qualification, complemented by courses that enable qualification in the field of Orientalistics.

The program offers an equal level of acquisition of theoretical and practical competencies that enable flexible engagement to the labor market requirements as well as further studies.

The core of the BA curriculum is consisted of linguistics (the structure of Arabic, Turkish and partially Persian languages), the history of Arabic, Turkish-Ottoman and Persian literature. The program also covers the courses from the history of Oriental-Islamic culture and civilization, concepts and methods of linguistics and literature research, the theory and practice of the text, linguistic practice (the practicuum  of Arabic, Turkish and Persian).

Lectures from linguistics (the structure of Arabic, Turkish-Ottoman and Persian languages) through eight semesters (3/2 classes of lectures and 1/2 classes of tutorials per week). During these lectures the theoretical aspects of phonetics, lexicology, morphology, syntax and text analysis of Arabic, Turkish-Ottoman and Persian languages ​​are mainly addressed.

Moreover, regarding the literature during four semesters, the lectures provide an overview of Arabic, Turkish and Persian literature in chronological order, according to the literary periods that characterize these literatures.

The mission of the BA program of Orientalistics is to prepare researchers and scholars, namely, researchers in Arabic, Turkish and to some extent Persian languages and literature. Based on the oriental past of the Balkan region, in Kosovo and beyond there is an urgent need for the recognition and study of this heritage, therefore, the BA program in Orientalistics aims at preparing qualitative and scientific studies that will deal with this. problem. Moreover, the growing contacts with the Orient countries, the preparation of researchers of oriental languages ​​and cultures makes this program a necessity. Therefore, this program focuses on preparing the students to expand and deepen their theoretical and analytical knowledge and interpretation skills. The study program has been prepared in complete accordance to the principles of the mission of the University of Pristina. The program provides the students who successfully complete their studies at this level, to pursue their academic interest and enroll in the next level of MA studies.

  • Turkish Language and Literature – BA, 240 ECTS

As a basic teaching-research unit, the Department of Turkish language and literature develops, manages and coordinates teaching and scientific research in the field of Turkish language and literature. The BA Program of the Turkish language and literature has been designed based on the needs of the Kosovo labor market, which offers some employment opportunities as teachers, translators, administration workers, etc. The Department of Turkish language and literature, which operates within the Faculty of Philology, has designed this program conceptualized as a basic qualification in Turkish language and literature, supplemented with courses that enable qualification in the field of methodology and didactics of Turkish, as a language both native and foreign, since a significant proportion of Turkish language and literature graduates work in educational institutions (universities, public and private schools, Turkish language courses).

  • Balkanistics – BA, 240 ECTS

Balkanistics is the newest program at the Faculty of Philology. The program meets the standards of the European Higher Education Area and it is designed taking into account the needs of our country and the labor market in the field of linguistics, translation, teaching and interlinguistic and intercultural communication.

The design of the program is based on relevant research in the field of language communication and institutional use of language in Kosovo which have proved the need for such a program.

With program’s double-major character, studies will focus on learning Albanian parallel with another Balkan language relying on the fact that there is a great demand in the labor market for other communities’ languages into Albanian translators and vice versa. The teaching component brings added value to this study program, as the possibility of having graduates focus on teaching Balkan languages in the Kosovar environment or teaching Albanian in community language schools.

The Balkanistics program includes three components, and it is oriented towards professionalizing the students in the field of translation, teaching of Balkan languages and scientific research of a comparative nature between Albanian and a Balkan language.

Students during their studies achieve competencies in the theoretical and practical field (practical translation work will be organized in public institutions, while teaching in public and private schools).

The Balkan Studies program lasts 4 years (8 semesters) and offers courses in the field of linguistics, where 3 Balkan languages ​​are studied (Albanian, Bosnian / Serbian / Croatian / Macedonian, Bulgarian, Greek) and one foreign language (selected among English, German, French, Italian, Spanish); courses in the field of translation; theoretical courses such as history, political geography, Balkan literature, as well as the media in the Balkans. The combination of courses has been achieved in collaboration with the regional and European universities that offer such integrated studies with a vast experience. Balkan languages ​​are taught by professors from Balkan countries.

With its multilingual profile and the qualifications offered, this program creates employment opportunities in the field of translation, teaching, media, academic activities, administration as well as in cultural institutions and archives, with the fact that there is a shortage in the market of translators, teachers, scholars of cultural and historical issues, specialists in the public sector of regional communications and experts in Balkan languages.
