The Faculty of Philosophy

The Faculty of Philosophy offers 7 study programs at the basic/bachelor level. The programs offered are:

History – BA, 180 ECTS

The BA History program provides opportunities for students to develop the necessary skills to engage in historical research and analysis and to engage the present by exploring and interpreting the past. The department cultivates in students the necessary skills to become critical and independent thinkers and citizens, providing the necessary skills for full and successful participation in society.

History is the basis of an enlightened, concerned and self-critical citizenry. Its premise is that we cannot prepare for the future without correctly perceiving and reflecting the world our ancestors made. In this pursuit, History provides a better understanding of self, practice in essential liberal academic skills, and knowledge of other peoples and practices.

The Department of History seeks to continue its tradition of excellence in teaching, serving students who are preparing for a variety of careers, including law, business, public and government service, education, public history, or activism. The primary goal of the Department of History in Education is to provide students with an interdisciplinary program that will serve them in a variety of careers.

Philosophy – BA, 180 ECTS

Philosophy programs provide the education and training of students in the field of philosophy, developing and affirming philosophical theories and concepts and promoting study and research in this field, the development of critical and creative thinking on the philosophical tradition and on the most significant issues for today's world, the development of human resources for the application of theoretical and philosophical achievements in practical life, the creation of professional and intellectual capacities, capable of taking civic responsibility over social political, social, cultural, educational processes, etc.

The main objectives of this program are:

  • Enable students to ask questions and raise issues,
  • Write, analyze and think in a logical and critical way and, likewise, participate in projects and in various institutions, develop in-depth knowledge of logic and theoretical philosophy, through which they will improve the competences of argumentation, articulation and the rational competence of criticism as well as to deal with different philosophical positions;
  • To acquire knowledge from the history of philosophy, through which a humanistic formation is achieved and the ability to understand, analyze and interpret philosophical works and deal with philosophical views and directions;
  • To achieve knowledge of concepts and theories also from practical philosophy, through which they can achieve a competence of problematization and examination of ethical and moral issues, as well as self-reflection and social-moral orientation.

Sociology – BA, ECTS

The Sociology program is among the first programs at the University of Prishtina. Positioned in a dynamic social, historical and political context, studies at the Department of Philosophy-Sociology began in the academic year 1971-1972. From nation, ethnicity, class, culture, gender, environment, family, sociologists in the Department of Sociology study and research the phenomena that structure society in Kosovo today. The efforts in the Department of Sociology have always been to base research and provide multiple opportunities for students to be involved in empirical research, in all phases of qualitative or quantitative research, both inside and outside the curriculum during their studies.

Interconnection and cooperation with a significant number of researchers and with various international research centers as well as the development of sociological studies rooted in the local context but in dialogue with that of other countries remains among the main goals of the Department of Sociology.

The development of the study program of bachelor's studies in the field of sociology has gone through a coordinated and comprehensive process. Specifically, the curricula and contents of the bachelor's program have been developed with a close coordination between the program holders and the holders of certain subjects within the program. The program meets the criteria of the National Qualifications Framework and the Qualifications Framework in the European Higher Education Area. During the development of this program, the advice and recommendations of the officials from the Office for Academic Development of the University of Prishtina, the Vice-Rector for Learning and Student Affairs, as well as those of the officials from the Kosovo Accreditation Agency were taken into consideration.

The main objectives of this program are for students to:

  • Demonstrate adequate understanding of terminology and key concepts in the field of sociology;
  • Demonstrate consistent knowledge in recognizing the development of sociology, current trends and significant factors in this development;
  • Recognize, compare and discuss the schools and theories of sociology and their criticisms;
  • Be knowledgeable on research techniques in sociology
  • Demonstrate adequate training for the formulation of basic proposals for social research;
  • Recognize and respect ethical standards in research and in relation to others;
  • They work in a team and respect human diversity;
  • Show a satisfactory level of application of knowledge from sociology in everyday life;
  • They show an adequate level of knowledge about interdisciplinary issues and topics.

Psychology – BA, 180 ECTS

The Department of Psychology already has a 20-year tradition of excellence in teaching and scientific research. Established in 2001, immediately after the war (1999), the Department of Psychology has contributed enormously to the establishment of the psychologist profession in Kosovo. Offering a BA curriculum comparable to that of other European universities, increasing the quality of scientific research, participating in international projects, working with different institutions and communities in the country, responding in a timely manner to the various challenges it faces society, make the Department of Psychology today one of the most respected branches not only from the University of Prishtina.

The Department of Psychology within its academic programs has the mission of advancing psychology as a science and the profession of psychologist through the quality education of the students of this department, the growth of scientific research in the field of psychology, the formation of the best civic and professional values in students , as well as the implementation of European standards and internationalization.

Political Science – BA, 180 ECTS

The goal of the program is to provide high quality education in the field of political science. The BA Political Science program dates back to 2001. In 2009, the BA program was reaccredited and redesigned in collaboration with the Universities of Salzburg (Austria) and Pavia (Italy).

Within this program, the list of proposed courses are related to the highlighted labor needs identified in Kosovo and beyond.

Some of the main courses of study are as follows: political methodology; political theory; international law; international economy; public policy and diplomacy; international relations; public administration; peace and conflict studies; civil society, etc.

During the drafting of this program, previous recommendations of external experts were taken into consideration. Thus, the first two years of the program will focus on basic political science courses, while, in the third year, students will have the opportunity to choose between two specialized subfields: A) International Relations and Diplomacy; B) Public Administration.

The objectives of this program are for students to be able to:

  • Understand the difference between politics as an activity and political science as an academic discipline;
  • Enhances critical thinking skills and enables an engaged democratic citizenry;
  • Train students to write and analyze public policy, human rights, the rule of law, minority rights and democratic citizenship;
  • Successfully use interdisciplinary methods of social scientific research;
  • To understand the political systems and political cultures of the respective systems;
  • Understand and analyze historical developments in the formation of policies such as the European Union;
  • Distinguish and understand the mandate and decision-making processes of the main institutions of the European Union;
  • Understanding the importance of gender studies and promoting policies involving women in decision-making;
  • Understanding of the main concepts of nation, state and public administration in the comparative perspective.

Social Work – BA, 180 ECTS

The Department of Social Work was founded in 2012 and is the only educational institution in Kosovo that offers Bachelor studies in Social Work. Today, the Department of Social Work has a significant number of applicants and this shows that students see it as a program that offers multi-disciplinary knowledge.

The curriculum of the Department of Social Work incorporates various disciplines and consists of areas such as social work methods: casework, family work, community work, work with marginalized groups; psychology, sociology, legislation, human rights, psycho-social counseling, professional practices, etc.

Graduate students can be employed in Social Work Centers and various governmental and non-governmental organizations in the field of social services such as child protection, family work, youth work, elderly work, correctional and rehabilitation centers for minors, work with people with special needs, family housing, shelters for mothers and children, community work, work with marginalized groups, work with women experiencing violence, organizations working in the field of research, organizations advocating for rights of man and social change etc.

Currently, the department enrolls 50 students per generation and we have 7 generations accepted in this direction so far, where a satisfactory percentage of students have managed to be employed by social care institutions, NGOs, municipal institutions, etc. Likewise, a number of students have managed to continue their master's studies in regional and European countries. However, the objective of the department is to strengthen the bachelor's level and in the near future to offer the master's level as part of the basic studies in Social Work, part of the Faculty of Philosophy.

The objectives of the BA Program in Social Work are:

  • Providing a quality program of studies in Social Work that will help students to act in the fields of Social Work in Kosovo and beyond;
  • Increasing the mobility of students and teachers in the European area of higher education;
  • Identification, intervention, and adaptation of the best European practices in various fields of Social Work in Kosovo;
  • Encouraging and developing research into social issues in Kosovar society to inform new perspectives in teaching and social policy in Kosovo;
  • Internationalization and networking of the Social Work Department with Social Work schools in the region, Europe, the United States of America, and beyond.

Cultural Anthropology – BA, 180 ECTS

Study programs of Cultural Anthropology enable students to learn about the history of cultural thoughts and living, and cultural heritage, to engage in various anthropological projects, both in local and international universities. As one of the most dynamic and creative spaces in UP, the Department of Anthropology cultivates and promotes anthropological study based on a combined theoretical and practical approach, in the context of many classic and contemporary debates within anthropology, social sciences and humanities in general.

Founded in 2001, at the initiative of Prof. Dr. Drita Statovci, and with the support of many academics and professionals, the Department has been consolidated as the only and successful BA program of anthropology in the Albanian language. In the Department, practical work is an integral part of the curriculum of the two profiles, where continuous field work is organized, which is presented through seminars, performances, field observation and interview visits, archaeological excavations, restoration, conservation, photography, filming, exhibitions and other activities.

Focused primarily on the historical and contemporary Kosovar context, our research is also comparative and internationally represented. The department has a number of research projects and exchange agreements with universities, institutions and organizations inside and outside the country, in the field of anthropology and archaeology. Within these projects, students are trained for research, practical work in the field, academic writing and profession. Likewise, students gain knowledge in the development of argumentation and theoretical analysis of empirical evidence and carry out work on topics related to language, family, race, gender, art, religion, state, nation, laws, bread, clothing, documents, customs, traditions.

Through research and teaching activities in the Faculty of Philosophy (Visual Ethnography Program, Video and Photo Archive, Gender Studies and Research Program, Archeology Hall, Institute for Social and Humanistic Studies, Anthropology Seminar), the Department of Anthropology creates connections between academia, learning, and the application of practices in various fields of employment.

The objectives of the BA Program in Cultural Anthropology are:

  • Students who complete this level of studies possess the following professional competencies:
  • The ability to identify, research, interpret and compare social and cultural relations, in the context of change from the past to the present.
  • The ability to use contemporary methods of anthropology in the realization of research in social relations and brought ethnographic writings, which emerged as a result of recent debates in anthropology and social sciences in general
  • Ability to plan and conduct archaeological excavations, including categorizing, documenting, describing and analyzing past artifacts
  • The ability to interpret past and present material culture in light of current anthropological and archaeological debates
  • Analytical and critical ability to understand anthropological texts, materials, and ideas
  • The ability to critically discuss issues of culture and cultural diversity, in the public and private sphere
  • Professional training in research, interpretation and management of cultural heritage, in a comparative context
  • Professional training in consulting and management in various institutions and organizations, including the private, public and non-profit sectors
  • Professional preparation in the compilation of projects, collection of oral histories, compilation of strategic documents for cultural institutions, curatorship of heritage collections, research and mapping of archaeological sites, production of ethnographic films and photographs
  • The ability to engage in collaborative interdisciplinary projects with other social sciences, humanities and technological developments.
