The Vulcanus in Japan program, is a prestigious initiative providing students in engineering and scientific fields with a unique industrial experience in Japan.
This eight-month program runs from August 2025 to March 2026 and offers a comprehensive blend of academic, linguistic, and professional development opportunities. Participants will benefit from:
• A seminar on Japanese culture and industry, offering essential insights into the Japanese business environment.
• A two-month intensive Japanese language course to equip students with the linguistic tools necessary for immersion.
• A six-month traineeship at a Japanese company, where students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and industry practices.
The EU-Japan Centre covers costs directly related to the internship: cost for providing lectures on Japan and Japanese language course (compulsory activities).
• The Host Company provides accommodation throughout the entire stay in Japan.
• A maximum of € 9,200 will be given in total per student for the period spanning from August to March. € 8,200 will be given for participation in the traineeship and its compulsory activities. An additional € 1,000 will be provided to each student who participates in an optional ‘Eyes on Japan’ assignment carried out as group work. The grant amount includes insurance coverage for the duration of stay in Japan. In case the EU-Japan Centre arranges insurance, the corresponding cost will be deducted from the total grant amount.
Students applying must meet the following criteria:
• EU Member State or associated country.
• Enrolled in engineering or scientific programs, such as computer science, biotechnology, mechanical engineering, and related disciplines.
• Between the 4th year and penultimate PhD year, and enrolled at a university at least through early summer 2025.
• Fluency in English.
Applications are assessed based on:
o Adaptability/resilience to experience abroad
o Academic career: regularity in studies
o Interest in an industrial experience in Japan (and attitude towards Japan and EU-Japan relations)
o Quality of motivation letter
o Quality of recommendation letter
o Overall accuracy of the application
o Grades: marks obtained at university
• Compatibility with at least one internship offered by a host company in Japan.
