The British Scholarship Trust offers funding for from 1 to 3 months. Applicants should be registered for a Masters or Doctorate in their home country and should normally be under 30 years of age, but exceptional circumstances may be considered.

The grant for the current year is £1000 per month for universities outside London and £1200 for institutions in London, where living costs are higher. The grant is intended to cover living expenses. The grants are modest but students can be expected to live reasonably comfortably on the grant. Tuition fees are NOT covered but some other fees charged by the host institution (bench fees, library use, etc.) may be met by the Trust. Travel expenses to and from the host institution are covered by the candidates themselves or by their home institutions.

MAIN RESEARCH GRANTS

These grants are for students engaged on research projects in their home countries who wish to spend a period of time at a UK university with expertise in their area of interest. This may involve being attached to a group carrying out research in that area. Applicants are asked to make contact with the main researcher at that university. Their teachers at their home university may be able to offer assistance and advice in facilitating these contacts.

LIBRARY GRANTS

These grants are for a visit of 4 weeks only, and are intended to support candidates whose home institutions may not have the library resources needed for the student’s research. UK university libraries do not normally charge for visiting students, but visitors cannot borrow books.

THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

In order to be considered for a scholarship, candidates should:

Be currently enrolled on a postgraduate course in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia or Serbia.

Possess an excellent academic track record

Demonstrate a good proficiency in English

Describe how a period of study in the UK will further their academic work and how this may benefit the scholar’s home and/or host institution

Have a well-considered workplan for their study visit

Commit to the submission of a report to the BST within 6 weeks of completing their study visit.

Be aged 30 or under on 1st October in the academic year of the study visit  (Candidates are encouraged to apply within 10 years of graduation (BA/BSc). However, we encourage older women and men whose academic work has been disrupted for family or other reasons to apply. The reasons should be stated clearly in the application).

Please note: Preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied abroad and to candidates who have made contact with the institution they wish to visit in the UK.
