On December 10 — International Human Rights Day was marked at the Faculty of Law with a discussion involving the Ombudsperson, Naim Qelaj, alongside students, institutional representatives, and civil society members.

In addition to Qelaj, the panel included the Rector of the University of Prishtina, Arben Hajrullahu, and human rights activist Igballe Rogova, while the meeting was opened and moderated by Florent Muçaj, Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs and Quality at the Faculty of Law.

Addressing the role of the University of Prishtina in education and the promotion of human rights, Rector Arben Hajrullahu emphasized the university's critical role in fostering a culture of human rights.

He advised students to abide by the cultural principle: “Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.”

On this significant day for the institution he leads, Ombudsperson Naim Qelaj reflected on the state of human rights in Kosova. Acknowledging Kosova’s difficult and discriminatory past, he praised the exceptional progress made in advancing human rights.

However, he stressed that while Kosova has strong legal frameworks, further improvement and full implementation of these laws are necessary.

Human rights activist and representative of the Kosova Women’s Network, Igballe Rogova, highlighted that laws provide a better life, but their value lies not only in their approval but also in their implementation.

She told the attending students that they are not merely the “future” of Kosova but its “present.”

The discussion continued with a lively Q&A session between the audience and panelists.

Both institutions' leaders, Rector Arben Hajrullahu and Ombudsperson Naim Qelaj, agreed to pursue joint activities between the University of Prishtina and the Ombudsperson’s Institution, following their meeting on November 27.

On December 10, 2024, the world marked 76 years since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly.
